The creation of 'Koryo Union' is the only peaceful solution in the Korean Peninsula!-[Edited]

M A Hossain

Finally the international community seems to get its sense back on the issue of resolving the existing political standoff in Korean Peninsula. In the past,I have repeatedly said undue pressure and illogical sanctions on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea(DPRK) would bring counter productive result. As a defence analyst, I can clearly understand the sentiment of a patriotic leader like Marshal Kim Jong Un. First of all let me clarify,to me Korean people, be it the peoples of the Republic of Korea,or the peoples of DPR Korea are friends. Bangladesh has historic relations both the Koreas. After the historic summit between the US President Donald Trump and Marshal Kim Jong Un, which I am seeing as a summit of beginning of a new era of prosperity and peace in the Korean Peninsula. This article is written with an honest desire of offering a mutually respectable formula to the leaders of both the Koreas.

Ever since division of Korea in 1950,Republic of Korea (ROK) is talking about unification of Korea, while DPRK is demanding re-unification of Korea. This is the major obstacle in finding a lasting peace formula. I don't think the people of DPRK would go under the administration of Seoul, while the people of ROK won't accept the leadership of Pyongyang. In my judgement Korean people definitely should be brought under a single umbrella keeping two political system for two of the Koreas. Meaning, a 'Koryo Union' comprising Republic of Korea and DPR Korea is the only workable solution. Under the Koryo Union, there will be a common military force to ensure sovereignty of both the Korea as well assure peaceful coexistence with the neighbouring countries like Japan, China and beyond.

Republic of Korea can utilize the huge skilled and semi skilled manpower of DPR Korea ;while Pyongyang can explore its massive mineral and natural resources with the technical collaboration of China, Japan and ROK which definitely would transform DPRK into a developed nation within the span of maximum 7-8 years. On the other hand, ROK can establish 'Koryo Union Special Economic Zone' both in ROK and DPRK under mutually agreeable proportion. The Koryo Union can have common airline, common shipping agency and even common currency. This common currency would be an additional one, keeping the existing currencies of both Koreas in circulation. While DPRK's Won and ROK's Won would be a local currency while currency of the Koryo Union would emerge as a international currency. In this case we can cite the example of Chinese Yuan and Foreign Exchange Certificate (FEC) or the Britain's model. While being in EU both British Pound and EU's EURO are in circulation in Britain. For  many years existence the two currencies never create any problem in the UK.

Creation of the Koryo Union will help both the member countries of the union in reducing their defence budget. Meaning both side will have fund available for socio-economic development. Currently DPRK has approximately 22 million members in the Korean Peoples Army (KPA).They are well trained, fully equipped and above all absolutely dedicated to their motherland. On the other hand Republic of Korea has around 300 thousand members in his army who to are equally capable as the KPA members. But defence expenditure of the ROK is much higher. Because they also have to bear the burden of paying costs to approximately 14 thousand soldiers from US defence forces. In addition to this, ROK are rather compelled in buying military equipments worth billions of dollar each year. Formation of the Koryo Union will most certainly relieve ROK from this huge expenditure. Not only that! Because of the tension in the Korean peninsula, countries like Japan even are compelled in spending billions of dollar in defence sector every year. Should there be no such burden, countries like Japan or ROK would be most beneficiaries.

Now the main question, which may even jeopardise the much expected peace process is, United States and Western country's undue demand of extermination of nuclear weapons of DPRK. I personally don't believe, Marshal Kim Jong Un is going to accept this. DPRK is already a nuclear power and at best they can suspend further development of nuclear weapon. Accepting this fact, if ROK and the US will sit with DPRK, definitely can anticipate a very pleasant outcome.

Congratulation to the inhabitants of the Koryo Union.

Superpower conflict : World order is at stake!

M A Hossain

After the Cold-War era, America became the lone Superpower in the world. Over the period of time, advancement of technology and turbulent geo-politics are bringing the threat of Superpower conflict back. American's jingoistic relations with other nations, China and Russia began to reassert their regional and global influence - display of military strength are stoking to stimuli for reordering of global power.

Superpower conflict is becoming a reality on the top of global agenda. The relative decline of US influence, rising of China as America's leading competitor, Russia's desire for greater role in global politics are made America's supremacy at stake. Now President Donald Trump has the only one option to make America great again. He needs to bug all nuclear weapon rich nations, makes turmoil in global politics and economy - and bring them in a bilateral negotiation. Mr. Trump needs to exhibit the world community that things happen the way America desires. US already has opened number of fronts- North Korea(denuclearization), China(trade war), Iran(JCPOA), Jerusalem(US Embassy relocation), G-7(tariff), Russia(presidential election meddling). All these bargaining issues need to be solved by the US to remain lone Superpower. In case of North Korea and China, Mr. Trump is partially successful. North Korea has agreed on denuclearization proposal and US-China trade war could put negative impact on Chinese fastest growing economic growth. Rest of the issues are in progress by the Trump's think tanks targeting next Presidential election to win.

President Trump must have an idea about the retaliation of aggrieved nations affected by his thuggish actions. Tension between Iran and US have been rising since May 2018 when Trump announced he was withdrawing from the nuclear deal signed by Tehran and major World power to curb Iran's nuclear power ambitions. Trump's decision already has put significant pressure on the Iranian economy. Now Tehran threatened to bloc the Strait of Hormuz which is the key passageway for 20% of traded oil world wide. Tehran also is expected to involve in massive military exercise in the Persian Gulf.

According to the analysis of several US strategic organizations - invoked to focus on strategic Superpower competition with China and Russia dropping down counter terrorism from top priority. Amid the mounting tension in South China Sea and trade war between  the US-China, Beijing has suggested the ASEAN allies to carry out oil and gas exploration in the Western Pacific and South China Sea but again proposed to exclude US interference in the waters of such activities. Taiwan invasion and Spratly island Campaign is compelling the US military to rethink a war with China. As a defense analyst, I think the United States already has been late to response China's aggressive ambitions in Indo-Pacific region. Since the 1996-97 Taiwan strait missile crisis, China could reach the capability of destroying Taiwan's air base with multi-layered saturation attack using short range ballistic missile(SRBM). However, today China also is capable of striking Kadena air base in Okinawa. This will compel US aircraft to fly from long distance to engage Chinese forces. China has deployed half of its fighting fleet with fourth generation fighters against Taiwan Campaign. It is very difficult task to operate in and near Chinese air space for US force because of Chinese surface to air  missile(SAM) system and early warning aircraft. US is superior to China for precision weapons and high-energy laser system to dazzle Chinese satellite's optical sensors to jam communication satellites. America also is superior to second-strike nuclear capability in the face of first-strike with numerical warheads advantage of 13 to one against China and beyond. At present China has developed robust control over the horizon intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance(ISR) capabilities which include military imaging satellite. Along with ASBM threat the US should consider the increased sophistication of Chinese submarine's launching capacity of intercontinental ballistic missile loaded nuclear warhead , cruise missile and torpedoes.

Though Russia has limited capabilities outside nuclear weapon and UNSC membership. It still enjoys the power to disrupt and reconfigure the global politics. Another significant factor is Russia's strategic geographical location, which makes it an indispensable player in both Asia and Middle East especially Ukraine and Syria. At present, Russia is a energy Superpower.

In my personal opinion, the military strategy dictates that the US President will give more emphasis on strong political - military relations with Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia to facilitate uninterrupted logistic supply during war time in the Asia-Pacific Theatre . Although governments of South Asian nations are widening diplomatic relations with Trump administration day by day. At this moment, Mr. Trump is not going to involve in a big tussle with Russia. Day by bay US is isolated  from its allies and the rest of the world. Now it has to be seen how America will face the upcoming challenges in geo-politics with China and foe-allies.

Trade war: A Thucydides Trap!

M A Hossain

Recently, the US President Donald Trump has taken a step to reduce trade deficit and has made turbulent global economy and politics. President Trump has imposed tariff of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminium which has justified on the basis of national security and huge trade deficit in goods import to US. US has 375 billion trade deficit with China which has crossed the previous record. Trump said that US already has lost in trade war with China. Just because of importing Chinese products, 60 thousand American factories got to shut down and 6 million Americans became jobless. Now Trump is using his Presidential special power, section -232 of Trade Expansion Act-1962 since after Ronald Regan.

During the presidential campaign,  Donald Trump gave a clear indication of reducing trade deficit with other countries and made husting of 'Make America Great Again'. Just after sworn as president, he is fulfilling his promise to adopt a more protectionist approach to put 'America First' policy on trade which is spurring retaliatory measures by friends and foes of US. Trump has withdrawn the US from the Trans Pacific Partnership(TPP), North American Free Trade Agreement(NAFTA) and renegotiated its free trade agreement with South Korea. To protect the US interest, Trump resorted to import substitution policy. Tariff will make the imported goods more expensive for American consumers and business to buy. That will ramp up production of those goods in American industries to meet local demand. As a result it will create more jobs and will decline the graph of trade deficit.

Initially, Mr. Trump actions are motivated by pure politics and he has made it in reality. US could reduce its world trade deficit. Even US-China trade deficit has reduced 11.5% as on march 2018. The manufacturing industries became vibrant and it created 224 thousands of new jobs in US market.

Trump has opened number of fronts - Iran(JCPOA), China (trade), Jerusalem(US Embassy relocation), North Korea(denuclearization) and G-7(tariff). It is very well clear that all the fronts are his bargaining issues. And this trade war is nothing but to reduce Chinese dominance around the world. US President is well aware of China's vision "Made-in-China" by 2025. Many countries were lured by Chinese cheap products and huge investment. Over the period of decades, those nations became captive by China and started controlling the politics and national economy. And Beijing already has signalled it won't accept major change to its "Made-in-China" blueprint. Trump sees this escalating trade war with Beijing and the rest of the world, as an effort to tip the balance before it is too late and bring China into Thucydides Trap. But it also true, America's trade imbalance didn't occur overnight. Now if the balance needs to be readjusted it will take many years - perhaps decades - for this to happen.

China is much more dependent on US to export than any other country. World trade contributes 37% to China's GDP where US is 27%. Trump is taking chance with China to put tremendous pressure on Chinese economic growth. US has complained of 150 billion dollar on intellectual property right. Mr. Trump wants to reduce its bilateral trade surplus with the US by 100 billion dollar which he demands to do by buying same worth of US oil or gas.

Washington is more aggressive and offensive in the trade war while Beijing is being seen reactive, defensive and reciprocal. In my personal opinion, Beijing wants to avoid the Thucydides Trap. There is no reason to believe that both Washington and Beijing are interested to engage military conflict. What is unknown at this time is how long it will take two leaders in negotiating table for mutual beneficial trading partnership and at what cost for both countries.

Roads are becoming death trap?

M A Hossain

Princess Diana, was died in a road accident which was much hyped pathetic incident around the world. It was rumoured that MI-6(state intelligence agency) was behind that plot. We, the human[inhuman] beings are sole responsible for any disaster in our planet. No sensible person even can bring a single example that except mankind, other creatures [natural or artificial] are the right cause of any such disaster, be it climate change, earth quack, flood, HIV or road accident, vandalism, social insecurity and violation of human right. We can't deny that we have come to earth not to take only but also to discharge some responsibilities. I am penning such a burning issue which makes our subconscious vocal and need a sustainable solution.

To escape sexual harassment, a female garment worker, Sheuli Begum jumped from a running bus and crushed to death under the wheel of another bus following. This pathetic incident took place at Tangail district in Bangladesh where people were uproared in recent past of similar  incident with a varsity student-cum- NGO female worker. Another bright life, Payel was murdered by staffs of a passenger bus. Instead of helping, the perpetrators jettisoned injured Payel to die and dumped his body in a road side ditch. There are thousands of horrendous and heinous examples in our memory. Accident Research Institute (ARI)  from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology(BUET) and World Bank's statistics have raised deep concern about the facts and figures of road accident in Bangladesh. Every year, approximately 12,000 people are killed in road accident and more than 35,000 people are injured, many disabled for life. World Bank has suggested Bangladesh to reduce 50 percent road accident for achieving Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs). Annually, Bangladesh has to bear damage of 40,000 crore of Taka for road accident. This decrepitude transportation scenario must be brought under strict monitoring by the authorities.

This transport workers are not alien rather they are very much part and parcel of our society. Government's ineffectiveness, in capabilities, and corruption are the main reasons to put mass transport facilities into private sectors. To be very candid, no driver wants to kill his/her passengers. But it is the rogue system and our negligence which  kill or led to be killed our people in road accident. The high growth in urbanization and motorization can be identified as key factors to the road accident. The road system are also experiencing greater congestion, physical deterioration, and safety problem. Law enforcing agencies (Specially traffic department) have a crucial role to play in identifying and holding accountable for reckless driving, over speeding, inappropriate overtaking, over loaded vehicle, variety of vehicle characteristics and defects in vehicle. Road and Transport authority must issue the licence to the skilled drivers only. In its response, they must conduct driving and road etiquette training round the year. Enforcement and sanctions of traffic laws by the law enforcing agencies and Road Transport authority can drastically reduce the figure of road accident. No law enforcement staffs are to be allowed owning and operating transport business.

As a citizen, we too have some responsibilities to improve this situation. While travelling, we all should respect and ensure the traffic rules. We must not allow any driver(public or private) to break any traffic law. As a sensible person, we must follow the road etiquette and make awareness initiatives to the society as well as to our children.

Above all, our political 'honest intention' can change the total crisis. Maximum transport owners are political leaders or politically affiliated. Accused political person must be accountable to his/her party's head and party should take stern action against him/her after inquiry. Political parties must be prompt to facilitate proper implementation of rule of law against the perpetrators. No leader[affiliated with transport worker's politics] should be allowed to remarks irresponsibly on road accident by flashing his dirty teeth.

Indeed it is possible to significantly reduce the figure of road accident by implementing a effective and coordinated safty policy and action which required significant improvement in relevant sectors and improvement of public awareness program. Every life is valuable and accountable to his/her near and dear one, be it Shajahan Khan(lawmaker), Payel(student), Sheuli(worker), Tareq Masud(creative personnel) or 40 teenagers(our children) from Sitakundu.

North Korea : No more a threat to the world peace and opening a new economic corridor

M A Hossain

North Korean leader Marshal Kim Jong Un has started important step dismantling some facilities at its main satellite launching station which is believed to be the testing ground for intercontinental ballistic missiles. Recent satellite images has confirmed to the expertise that some signs of dismantling to the launching site have appeared. This is going to be a landmark step forward in fulfilling a promise after the historic summit between US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un. As per US based website 38 North's statement the satellite imagery analysis indicated the North had started dismantling a process building and a rocket-engine test stand which had been used for testing liquid fuel engines at its Sohea Satellite Launching Station. International community had seen this launching station of Pyongyang's space program a fig leaf for missile tests. However, Pyongyang sincerely begins the process of denuclearization. And it can not be implemented overnight. It would take time as the entire process should be done scientifically.

Pretty soon, Marshal Kim Jong Un should declare a comprehensive economic plan paving ways to the foreign nations in investing in industrial sectors in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea(DPRK). Initially Pyongyang would put special emphasis on investments in agro-industrial sectors.

Few of European nations though are yet to make any comment on the Trump-Kim historic summit and the agreement, the withdrawal of sanctions on the DPRK would take some times as they first need to make sure Pyongyang sincerely begins the denulearization process.

Republic of Korea(ROK) can establish common special economic zone both in DPRK and ROK under mutually agreeable proportion. In this regard, ROK can utilize the huge skilled and semi-skilled man power of DPRK. ROK also can invest common airline. shipping agency etc.

This is the most appropriate time for the Bangladeshi textiles and ready made garment industries to immediately focus on establishing both knit and oven garment factories - conventional and high-end by taking the advantage of comparatively cheaper but highly disciplined and hard working North Korean workers. Bangladesh also can establish leather processing factories, electronic industries(under Chinese joint venture) in DPRK.

North Korea's extreme cold weather is not favorable to palm oil. Under such circumstance, Bangladeshi entrepreneurs can consider establishing soya bean oil and cotton seed oil refineries in that country.

United States, China and African nations can greatly contribute in exploring extremely potential mineral resources and mining industries in DPRK.

Following President Donald Trump's grand success in Singapore and after signing an agreement with Marshal Kim Jong Un, several companies from Thailand, Indonesia, UAE, Israel, Poland and Philippines are considering establishing several business enterprises in the DPRK especially in the tourism and entertainment sector. It is anticipated that from mid 2019, at least 7-8 million tourists from around the world would visit Pyongyang and several tourist attraction sites.

There actually no reason to have any doubt on the sincerity of Kim Jong Un in denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula. Withdrawal of the American troops from South Korea may also take some time. So the tactics of putting further pressure on Pyongyang by continuing the undue economic and punitive sanctions would be counter productive.

Bangladesh : Politics of uncertainty may end up in a black hole!

M A Hossain

A nation lacking patriotism are the heaviest burden to any country. But when politicians become unpatriotic, status of those nations can only be compared with those helpless Jews loaded in the train of Nazi forces. Politics are expected to breed selfless politicians who would dedicate themselves towards serving the people. But, unfortunately, the cases of our politicians are totally contrast. They, instead of dedicating themselves for the good of the people and the country - very shamelessly they pledge their thoughts, goals, even the entire entities into the grips of their master from other nations.

As the general election of 11th parliament is very closing to its scheduled time, the political arenas are becoming more vibrant. The debate is on regarding the process of upcoming general election. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) clarifies their stance time and again where Awami League confronts against BNP with constitutional advantage - general election in December 2018 will be held under Sheikh Hasina as head of the government. As per the present constitution obligation, BNP has to take part in next general election under the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Bigwigs of Bangladesh Awami League are strongly echoing this message to the national and international community. But leaders of BNP are lamenting it as suicidal attempt to participate in general election under the ruling party. That's why before general election, they(BNP) participated all kinds of electoral processes -to show the national and international community - and strengthening their demand that it's a wild dream to expect a free, fair, and credible election from  Awami League. BNP's intention became more clear after the defeat in Gazipur, a senior leader dubbed this 'defeat' not a defeat. After each and every election BNP is debriefing to the international representatives about the ruling party's 'controlled election'. In this case, BNP is successful. The Westerners (specially the US and UK) expressed deep concern about holding a free, fair, and credible election under the ruling party. At this stage future of politics in Bangladesh is heading towards an uncertainty.

As I predict - now the reality has come out from horse's mouth! Bangladeshi rulers though are hiding their worries and fear behind artificial smile - their palpitations and blood pressure already have crossed the alarming level. To Sheikh Hasina, the only challenge is crossing the electoral hurdle in December 2018. She actually can attain this goal by using her loyalist Election Commission(EC) and band of thugs - who would stuff ballot papers- fill ballot boxes- and make her winner in a fake election. None of the bigwigs of ruling Awami League are considering the Western request of holding free, fair, credible, and participatory election. Because they know, West are not their allies. Instead, India and its unethical leaders are ready to extend any possible help to Awami League in continuing Bangladesh as its 'vessel state' by keeping Awami League in power. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unwilling in seeing a Bangladesh minus Awami League. Because, he and his party comrades are convinced - Awami League only is a 'Indian political party'. They also know West or China can not become a prominent partner of Bangladesh if the 'Indian political party' remain in power. To India, ensuring Awami League power eternally are much more important than proclaiming a secular India into a Hindu Republic of India.

Our politicians don't believe what they say- they don't say what they believe. As a result we can see a gulf of differences in freedom of political expression and right to political activities  between Awami League and BNP. The confrontational stance between two largest political party in Bangladesh is really a great concern for the nation. It creates an insecurity to the society and great threat to the sovereignty of the country. At this situation, senior citizens and leaders from BNP are strongly demanding a political dialogue between two major parties. In my personal opinion, dialogue between major political parties is not at all a solution or savior from this crisis. Sheikh Hasina had shown her courage to attain a dialogue with her main opposition but she was refused with tremendous humiliation [but political victory] by the crooks of some BNP's think tanks as well as enemies of the nation. Now regarding inter party dialogue, they got to seek and wait for the mercy from Sheikh Hasina.

Now the billion dollar question is how to get rid of this great crisis. Yes, only solution is the 'honest intention' of the government to avoid the confrontational situation and make an atmosphere for holding a free, fair, and participatory general election.

Our electoral history is not very praiseworthy. And recent experience of present Election Commission is not satisfactory. Khulna and Gazipur city corporation election have emerged as 'controlled election' of so-called 'satisfactory election' by Election Commission. One thing is very clear, under this Election Commission- free, fair, and credible election is a day dream- if not wild dream. But at this moment, I personally don't expect a rational responsibilities from present EC and democratic values from ruling party. It will take more time to bring political reform amongst the democratic parties. More disastrous situation, internal and external pressure will make our politicians more responsible to their duties and dedication. With this very short span of democracy, we should not be very optimistic about democratic culture and values from the parties. When the political parties are not practicing democracy then how the government formed by those parties will become democratic and let alone the so-called independent constitutional institutions like Election Commission, Anti Corruption Commission, Judiciary etc.[Don't label me as apolitical] But we don't have magic bone to resolve this ethical crisis in politics at this moment.

Bangladesh Awami League is a secular political party. Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) is a radical Hindu party. Moreover, India, for the first time since 1971,has lost credibility in the eyes of the people of Bangladesh. The impression is that New Delhi has failed to guide it's neighbour in the hours of crisis. This failure is not because of political motivation but because of  lack-lustre diplomacy. In my personal opinion- ideologically, morally, ethically BJP can never be a political master of Awami League. But in reality, it happens so. And this is going to be a kick off for political disastrous situation. Bangladesh Awami League might extend its tenure more consecutive times but it will exterminate the present Awami League and emerge as a secular democratic political party in future.

Let us look into another political factor in Bangladesh. In the eyes of Indian policymakers, BNP is an anti-Indian party. But in recent days, BNP leaders are competing in seeking 'blessings' from radical Hindu India returning to power. In my opinion, ultimately, both the parties are going to be losers. It pretty odd witnessing both the mainstream political parties in the country [by defying the public sentiment] had already made their presence [as humble worshippers] in the temple of radical Hindutva. Such tendencies in the Bangladeshi politicians are unexpected, unacceptable and even indecent.

Sheikh Hasina actually has no more cards in her hands. She already has played all the cards- noble and evil - for the sake of remaining in power by pleasing her Indian master. The end result is - Hasina has been pushed into the point of no return. Sheikh Hasina must have already realized this fact. But,  the only option she has too engage into the ultimate battle of survival by confronting with her political and ideological rivals. Difference between the two major political parties are widening everyday. This confrontational situation certainly are pushing the very fate of democracy into absolute uncertainty.

Bangladesh : Politics of revenge & gain

M A Hossain

Following the fall of autocratic military regime of General Hussain Muhammad Ersad in 1990, the public perception in Bangladesh was, Awami League under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina would win the landslide victory in the general election. Public perception and sentiment were so smart that no one could exactly feel the pulse of the people. Right before the election in 1991, during exclusive interview to BBC Bangla journalist Sirazur Rahman and aggrieved Sheikh Hasina in response to a question said; she wants to win the election to take revenge on the betrayer nation which killed her father and members of the family. Sensing the consequence of this comment, BBC decided not to air the interview. But the matter was already leaked by Sirazur Rahman himself. This had put the nation into extreme dilemma. They started rewinding their memory ; and instantly remember Sheikh Hasina, back in 1986, right before a fake election held under the military dictator had publicly declared in a rally - " Those who will join this election under military dictator Ershad will be branded as national betrayer". Hours after this strong statement, at the odd hour of night, it was none but Sheikh Hasina herself who abruptly join the election.

No one dared reminding Sheikh Hasina, she actually had turned into a national betrayer by joining the fake election and by dishonoring her own political sermon. But in reality, such wrong disease are very much prevailing with in most of politicians in the world. They don't believe what they say- they don't say what they believe. Unfortunately Sheikh Hasina had open her mind to the interview with BBC Bangla; which resulted in a catastrophic defeat for Bangladesh Awami League and an unexpected landslide victory for Bangladesh Nationalist Party(BNP). But one thing became crystal clear- people of Bangladesh do not admire politics of revenge.

Sheikh Hasina too realized a fact, it is not appropriate to be honest with the people. Instead politicians should adopt the art of mockery. Taking lesson from this, right before the general election of 1996, the same Hasina turned into a neo-prophet of peace ; by putting on hijab and seeking apology to the nation for the crime and blunders of her legendary father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

People accepted the apology of Hasina and voted her into power thus honoring her with the leadership of the nation. They believed a repented Sheikh Hasina will never repeat the blunder of her father and the band of crooks surrounding Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. They had the firm belief - Sheikh Hasina will dedicate herself in serving the nation thus attaining the image of a true pro-people leader. They wanted to see a Mahatma Gandhi - a Nelson Mandela - or Abraham Lincoln in Sheikh Hasina. But they didn't even think in their wildest thought - Sheikh Hasina is a politician - not an angel! Yes, Gandhi, Mandela, or Lincoln too were politicians. But, they were free from the disease of revenge and greed. Politicians definitely need the quality of a precise human being. But unfortunately, politics has gone into the wrong hands of mere beasts.

During the entire period of 1996-2001, Sheikh Hasina could not show any magic of a true leader. Instead her actions were just Xerox copies of her father and his rule. People became suffocated with the whimsical, wrong and hot headed governance of the self-styled daughter of democracy.

The people had no room but they choose the bad from worst. They had to vote Khaleda Zia and her Bangladesh Nationalist Party(BNP) into power. Although people were fully aware of the evil, greedy, and proud tendencies in Khaleda Zia. Being the wife of General Ziaur Rahman, a man who at least enjoys the reputation of being honest (financially - not politically)- she allowed her own brother Major (rtd) Sayeed Eskandar and his band of looters in not only nabbing the wealth of Bangladesh but also in precisely screwing the Armed Forces in particular and the people in general. Eskander had no shame in teaching his own nephew(son of Khaleda Zia) Tarique Rahman, the art of corruption, nepotism, falsehood, looting, swindling of public money, smuggling out tons of cash to abroad - and even womanizing.

But, Khaleda Zia at least have certain degree of decency - just because she is the wife of a General. During her tenure of 1991-1996, Sajeeb Wazed Joy(son of Sheikh Hasina) was caught by the law enforcing agencies when he and his friends, being drunk, drove their car on the road divider after hitting homeless people. No one though died but were critically injured being hit by Joy's car. Most of the BNP men wanted to send Joy into prison. But soon after hearing this news, a decent wife of a General - Khaleda Zia instructed to hand over Joy and his friends to the family members with full respect.

The biggest mistake Khaleda Zia did commit was the voter less fake election in February 1996, which gave tremendous political mileage to her political rivals. But Khaleda Zia didn't take any lesson from the past. She tried to hold another voter less election in  2006, which was confronted by Awami League and its political allies. The confrontational politics led to military intervention. Few senior army officers, including Khaleda Zia's relative Major General Masud Uddin Chowdhury rushed to the Presidential Palace, forced President Iazuddin Ahmed in appointing Fakhruddin Ahmed (a former official from World Bank) as the chief adviser of a military backed interim government.

From the very first hour of their rule, the military backed interim government declared a war against corruption. Dozens of BNP leaders were arrested ; which was followed by arrest of Awami League leaders too. Finally, they also arrested Sheikh Hasina and then Khaleda Zia. This had suddenly turned General Moeen U Ahmed politically ambitious. He wanted to become a political third force. This wrong attitude had also led him to the wrong tactics of revenge and even greed. Moeen brought dozens of politically charged cases against the leaders of BNP and Awami League, while his inner circle got indulge into shameless corruption. Although in January 2007, people of Bangladesh whole heartedly welcomed the military intervention. They quickly turned confuse in drawing a line between this rule and the politicians. Another problem with General Moeen was his extreme romance with India as well as clear indication of the military backed government towards Awami League - at a later stage.

In 2008, Awami League won a landslide victory in the general election and Sheikh Hasina became the Prime Minister for the second time. But onwards she didn't hesitate in exposedly moving ahead with her agenda of establishing one party rule in one hand and taking full revenge on the nation, political rivals and the Bangladesh Armed Forces. She also, in collaboration with General Moeen had played dubious role where 57 brilliant officers of Bangladesh Armed Forces were brutally murdered inside the HQ of Bangladesh Rifles (Now Border Guard Bangladesh). There were rumours, India actually wanted to take revenge of Padua defeat ; where several members of border security force of India were killed by Bangladesh Rifles during a gun fight(in fact a skirmish). The mighty Bangladesh Armed Forces taught a befitting lesson to Indians - by exhibiting the 'audacity' of greatness. India had no problem in using Sheikh Hasina in taking a 'befitting' revenge on Bangladesh.

This particular incident inside Bangladesh Rifles HQ had given the opportunity to Sheikh Hasina in sending hundreds of army officers into force retirement. Even some of them were charged with criminal cases. India's RAW(spy agency) even invented the ridiculous theory of coup attempt(or attempts) thus enhancing Hasina's opportunities of sacking many more officers of the Bangladesh Armed Forces.

During 2001-2006, Khaleda Zia's government actually went captive into the hands of her corrupt sons Tariqur Rahman and Arafat Rahman ; who established a defacto power house named 'Hawa Bhaban' where from the two sons with the help of their scoundrel friends had established the regime of looting, corruption, nepotism - and what not! Khaleda tried to suffocate her political opponents by using the law enforcing agencies. To legitimize her evil deeds, she shook hands with several militancy groups such as Khatmey Nabuwat Andolon, Harkatol Jihad etc. She even tried to eliminate Sheikh Hasina through a state sponsored grenade attack on 21 August 2005. Sheikh Hasina narrowly escaped this assassination bid.

During BNP's rule, British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury came under grenade attack in the holy shrine of Shah Jalal in Sylhet. Awami League prominent leader Shah A M S Kibria, Ahsanullah master were amongst the few who were killed by the BNP thugs.

Khaleda Zia convincingly believed, the only tool of pleasing the West was declaring war against Islamist militancy. With this agenda she began offensives on Jamatul Mujahidin(JMB) and other militancy groups. But the Western world didn't get be fooled. They knew, both Khaleda and Hasina are inclined towards Islamist parties and any so-called war against militancy by either of these Bangladeshi leaders are mere eye wash.

Once again, politics of revenge and gain has put Bangladesh into jeopardy. Sheikh Hasina is unwilling in leaving the office even in the distant future. She has been crushing her political rivals through numerous ways and means. No one knows, what fate awaits for unfortunate Bangladesh. India is ready in doing anything in keeping Sheikh Hasina in power.

To Bangladeshi politics, the United States and the West had long become irrelevant. Meanwhile, Rohingya crisis, lack of rule of law and gross violation of human rights, freedom of expression, right to religion are putting increasing burdens on the very existence of democracy in the country. Bangladesh is not Syria - at least, but the situation here is no less complicated than any of the crisis. Politics of revenge and gain has already put the very sovereignty of Bangladesh under cloud. No one can anticipate - what awaits for this nation even tomorrow.

America versus China, India and the EU?

M A Hossain

After President Donald Trump's announcement of hitting US $ 200 billion on Chinese exports to the United States with 10 percent tariffs, if Beijing retaliates against his previous announcement to target US $50 billion in imports ; in stunning bid, India has increased the custom duty on several goods including Bengal grams, lentils and artemia- a kind of shrimp imported from the United States. The import duty on chickpeas and Bengal grams has been increased to 60 percent and for lentils, it has been raised to 30 percent.

India also has hiked import duties  on boric acid, and binders for foundry moulds to 7.5 percent while that on domestic reagents was raised to 10 percent. The duty on artemia has been hiked to 10 percent. The other products on which duties have been increased, include, certain kind of nuts( imported from the United States, China and African nations), iron and steel products (imported from China, European nations, and the US), apples, pears, flat rolled products and stainless steel, other alloy steel, tube and pipe fittings, screws, bolts and rivets(mostly imported from China).

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has increased the import tariff to retaliate President Donald Trump's recent announcements of increasing tariffs on steel and aluminium products exported to US by other countries. President Trump's decision of increasing tariffs on the steel and aluminium items has affected India's steel exports to the US by US $ 198 million and aluminium shipments by US $ 42.4 million. India's exports to United States in 2016-2017 fiscal year stood at US $ 42.21 billion. India also is exporting readymade garments and textile products (including high-end garments) worth billions of dollars. Even Ivanka Trump's business enterprises are buying readymade garments from India, while there are serious allegations against those India's companies exporting high-end textile items to the Trump's worth billions of dollars of treating their workers, especially female workers as slaves. This allegation has been raised right in presence of Ms. Ivanka Trump, when she visited India last year.

India's counter increase of import tariffs and taxes not only directly challenges the lone Supper Power in the world but it clearly is an exposed act of showing red-eyes to President Donald Trump and his administration.

As in my previous articles, repeatedly I had claimed that India has become over- ambitious in emerging as global power and Narendra Modi and his previous governments had very successfully patronized and promoted anti- American forces in the region and had even planted Delhi's loyalist governments in some of the South Asian countries, including Bangladesh, most possibly India now is going to play extremely offensive roles alongside China and some of the European Union nations against President Donald Trump's 'America First' policy.

After leaving UNESCO by branding its as biased towards Hamas, the US ambassador to the United Nations, Ms. Nikki Halley has declared to leave the membership of the United Nations Human Rights Commission by branding it as 'Israel basher'. I would like to humbly remind ambassador Nikki Halley and the Trump administration that India not only has been a loyal friend of Iran, Palestinians and Hamas, but it always has been playing significant role in any anti-Israel initiatives taken by the United Nations. New Delhi has clearly rejected Trump's decision of shifting the United States embassy to Jerusalem. Because, India does not recognize Jerusalem as the 'undivided and eternal capital' of the Jewish State. But most possibly, President Donald Trump or his administration ; including ambassador Nikki Halley do not have the guts of challenging India's exposed anti-US policies. If to the US administration, China is the key economic rival than India certainly is their main ideological and political enemy. President Donald Trump needs to remember- Narendra Modi is the preacher and promoter of radical Hinduism ; and any radical Hindu won't even ever recognize any other religious beliefs except Hinduism. In their minds, Christianity, Islam, Judaism and all other religions but Hinduism are 'man-made'. But, Hindus won't open their minds on this issue as they are continuing be fooling the world through hypocrisy which is no different than Iranian's rogue policy called 'Taqiya'( Deception).

As a part of President Donald Trump's 'America First' policy and making America great again, it is important for Washington to closely monitor the Hindutva India. As America is known as the land of braves and heroes - India always is known as the lands of crooks and hypocrites. Lets not forget this point!

Malaysia -typed political 'earthquake' awaits for Bangladesh

M A Hossain

As per the advice of the policymakers of Delhi's south block, the current autocratic and corruption- plagued government in Bangladesh are determined in holding another fake election with the active collaboration of its loyalist election commission, law enforcing and security agencies as well as some of the opportunist senior officials of Bangladesh Armed Forces. Under this agenda, the ruling party are exerting full influence on the judiciary in keeping Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson and former three times prime minister Khaleda Zia in prison by creating numerous legal obstructions. The ruling party even are denying proper medical treatment to an ailing Khaleda Zia in the prison.

Mrs. Zia is the wife of the former chief of army and a veteran freedom fighter Maj Gen Ziaur Rahman. Gen Zia was assassinated in 1981in Chittagong in a mysterious coup. Former military dictator Hussein Muhammad Ershad is believed to have hands behind the tragic assassination of Maj Gen Zaiur Rahman and subsequent murder of Maj Gen Manjur ( paternal uncle of The Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam). Gen Ershad's Jatiya Party are part of the current illegitimate government along with some anti-West socialists like Hasanul Haq Inu. Hussein Muhammad Ershad is the 'Special Envoy' to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with the status of a cabinet minister. While his wife is the chief of the so-called opposition in the parliament. Most of the Western nations, including the United States did not recognize the so-called general election held on 05 January 2014. Only India, China and Russia (and Iran) had not only recognized this election but had vowed working with the illegitimate government. Of course, United States could play vital role in pressing Sheikh Hasina in either ensuring free, fair and transparent election or at least go for another real election weeks after the January 05, 2014 general election ; but due to bankrupt diplomacy and foreign policies of Barack Obama, Washington failed in doing so. Before the January 5th election, Sheikh Hasina told both the United States and United Nations that holding that election were a 'constitutional obligation' and she would immediately declare a fresh election immediately after the controversial and fake election, which would be participated by all the political parties, including the largest opposition - BNP. But, ultimately by breaching her own commitment (repeatedly in public), she not only fooled the international community and the people of Bangladesh, but, once again, proved herself as betrayer and deceptor.

As another general election is almost at the doorstep (December 2018), this time Sheikh Hasina has adopted a newer strategy. Her government has filed thousands of political charges false cases against her political rivals, had imprisoned journalists critical of corruption, nepotism and wrong doing of her government, imprisoned many offices of Bangladesh Armed Forces [through fictitious and dubious charges ] by exerting her full influence on the lower courts as well as apex courts. Party loyalists are being planted into the post of judges while exposed corrupt lawyers are appointed as public prosecutors. This nexus of politically biased judges and corrupt public prosecutors had not only tarnished the very image of the judiciary of the country but had totally screwed the rule of law thus transforming courts of justice into kangaroo courts.

State of the rule of law, human rights, freedom of press, freedom of expression, rights to religion in today's Bangladesh are no better than Cambodia or any of the authoritarian or autocratic regimes.

A leading English newspaper in Bangladesh, The Daily Star on 15June 2018 at its front page published a commentary titled- "BNP's challenges bigger this time", saying the party finds itself in more adverse situation than ahead of 2014 [fake and questioned] polls.

The entire commentary clearly are aimed at making BNP leaders, supporters and anti- Awami League bloc extremely frustrated. It wanted to give a clear signal of 'easy' continuation of the third consecutive terms for Sheikh Hasina and her illegitimate and autocratic government.

Anyone having minimal knowledge or experience on this daily - know with certainly - behind most of their 'homemade' or 'desk made' commentaries, there certainly are some mysteries. Though I at least do not know the motive behind this prominently published 'desk-made' commentary, I always can smell rat in it. Through this, The Daily Star, well in advance had told the world- a free, fair and participatory election in December 2018 in Bangladesh, is a mission impossible. It may even instigate and inspire the international community in increasing pressure on Sheikh Hasina in abandoning her agenda of remaining in power by hook or crook. It even may prominently bring the Bangladesh issue to the attention of the Trump administration. We all know - President Trump and his administration are committedly against any autocratic rule in the world.

Although the political future in Bangladesh is gloomy enough, political analysts are seeing a 'political earthquake' in the country much ahead of the December 2018 general election. In their views, during any political vacuum, something extraordinary always takes place in every country. In Malaysia, for example, an imprisoned Anwar Ibrahim played the key- factor with the mesmeric pre-polls campaign of 93-years - old former dictator Mahathir Mohammad and successfully defeated the crook, greedy and corruption- plagued government of Najib Razak. Hypothetically, even if we compare an imprisoned Khaleda Zia with Anwar Ibrahim, we still don't find a 'Mahathir Mohammad' in this country. Some people feel entertained in seeing a 'Mahathir' in former dictator Hussein Muhammad Ershad. Here I would delightely disagree. Mahathir Mohammad might have been an autocrat or dictator, but he is not a liar, hypocrite, deceptor, pretendor, or a corrupt. It is true, he had abuse power by wrongly influencing the judiciary in falsely convicting his political rival Anwar Ibrahim. But, hopefully he had realized this sinful act. That is why, during his election campaigns, Mahathir Mohammad publicly spoke in defence of Anwar Ibrahim.

Now the billion -dollar question is - what political 'earthquake' may take place in Bangladesh and who is going to emerge as the savior of this unfortunate nation. Before 11 January 2007, no one in Bangladesh even could imagine in their wildest dream- the realities we already had witnessed- something similar to that or may be something even beyond our political calculation would take place - all on a sudden. As before, 11January 2007, Khaleda Zia herself even could not imagine - her enemies (like Gen Moeen U Ahmed, Gen Masud, Brig Gen Bari, Amin and others) were just within her inner circle - it won't be unlikely - the conspirators, who are waiting for the appropriate opportunity of another political 'earthquake' in Bangladesh, very much are within the very inner- circle of Sheikh Hasina. Let us not forget the history. Nawab Sirajud-Dowla was not ousted and assassinated  by anyone from outside - but by his very own, highly trusted [and even a relative ] - Mir Jafar Ali Khan! Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated by the individuals, who were considered by him as his own children. Mikhail Gorbachev was ousted by few of his most trusted military and security officials.

As I know, people do not take lesson from the history, so the much anticipated 'political earthquake' in Bangladesh gradually is becoming imminent. May Allah protect this nation!

Singapore summit, historic agreement and beginning of Washington- Pyongyang relations

M A Hossain

The Korean war has ended. The 1953- pause of the war between South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea(DPRK) has now totally been ended through the magnanimous diplomatic efforts of the US President Donald Trump and DPRK leader Marshal Kim Jong Un. It is not only the beginning of new era of cordial relations between Washington and Pyongyang, but it also is the era of peaceful coexistence of South Korea and DPRK. Through the Trump-Kim historic agreement, there will be an end to the very provocative joint military drill in the Korean sea. There also will be gradual denuclearization in the Korean Peninsula. Thousands of American troops deployed in South Korea will now be withdrawn and most definitely the United States President now will actively consider freeing some Asian nations from cruel but elected autocracies. For the sake of world peace and for stopping the alarming rise of religious extremism and militancy, corruption-plagued so-called elected regimes; which actually are cruel auticracies should now come under Washington's radar.

The process of denuclearization of the DPRK has to be done slowly and scientifically by giving considerable time. Such crucial initiatives can not be done hurriedly.

As a new era of cooperation has already started, hopefully President Donald Trump and his efficient administration will not only lift punitive sanctions from the DPRK, world leaders should also take initiatives in getting the sanctions imposed by the United Nations on the DPRK lifted immediately.

South Korean President Moon Jae In also needs to encourage establishment and expansion of business and investments in the DPRK.

Right after the very successful meeting and signing of the historic agreement between President Donald Trump and Marshal Kim Jong Un, several anti-peace elements, habitual critics and senseless supporters of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are engaged in misleading people in the world with their nasty propaganda stuffs. Even British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), instead of appreciating the successful summit and agreement are engaged in catering misleading, biased and molested facts with a clean agenda of undermining President Trump's grand diplomatic success.

Both China and Russia seem to be delighted at this historic agreement. Moscow even is eyeing on getting economic benefit by establishing wider economic cooperation with Pyongyang, soon after lifting of the UN sanctions. Japan too is clearly delighted. But the tones of Iranian and Indian media in particular are not at all positive. It seems, they can't accept President Trump emerging as the mightiest, smartest and most successful leader in the world. Because they understand, this historic success will make Donald Trump much confident and even ruthless on those over-ambitious nations like Iran and India, who had hidden desire of emerging as key players in the global issues.

In the Middle East, Saudi, Israeli, Kuwaiti and UAE medias are expressing hope and delight seeing the end of Korean war through the Trump-Kim agreement. Following this agreement, there are all the possibilities of beginning of a fresher and deeper economic, technological and agro-industrial cooperation between Pyongyang and Jerusalem. Enhanced cooperation between DPRK and African nations would most certainly take place in exploration of rich mineral resources in DPRK.

Job opportunities for hundreds and thousands of the North Koreans would be created once industrial establishments, especially readymade garment industries are set-up by the friendly nations of Washington. For Marshal Kim Jong Un, the immediate challenge would be eliminating food crisis and creating job opportunities in his country. In this regard, he may seek cooperation from the Trump administration in particular as well as from China. DPRK can also start earning billions of dollars by exporting skilled and semi-skilled manpower (especially in the mining and construction sectors) in the Middle East. North Koreans are reputed as hard-working nation.

Before concluding, I would like to put forward some personal opinions and suggestions to Marshal Kim Jong Un and his administration. Let no side consider the Singapore summit and the agreement as the end of many of the upcoming challenges. The days of DPRK's isolation may end soon. Pretty soon. But, Marshal Kim Jong Un should establish his favorable presence in the media and the web. His state news agency KCNA or the Pyongyang Times (which is yet to be available online) or his party's Rodong Sinmun newspapers may not be sufficient in countering many of the critics of the Singapore summit. After abandoning their missile and nuclear programs, DPRK should put urgent emphasis on economy, creating job opportunities for the people of DORK, enhance diplomatic relations with newer nations and focus on the media. As a patriot and efficient statesman, I do believe, Marshal Kim Jong Un and his team can achieve these goals.

All the best to the decent people in the Korean Peninsula!

The stunning culture of depoliticization, cruel treatment on prisoners and uncertain destination of Bangladeshi politics

M A Hossain

Former Prime Minister and chairperson of one of the largest political party in the country, Khaleda Zia suffered from a stroke on 05 June 2018, inside the so-called special prison ; where actually she has been kept in isolation since 08 February 2018. Policymakers of the ruling party are branding Khaleda Zia as a corrupt person. It is true that she has been convicted in a corruption case by a lower court in a country where independence and even dignity of the judiciary are already on dock. According to specific evidences, the chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, a loyalist of ruling party had already been proved as a thief, culprit, criminal, money launderer and a person of moral turpitude. Similarly too more high profile prosecutors appointed by the ruling party - barrister turin Afroz a prosecutor of the self styled International Criminal Tribunal and S M Wazeed Ali Khokan a prosecutor who had ulterior motives of generating unwanted enmity between the Bangladesh Armed Forces [ law enforcing agencies] and the ruling party- more precisely Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Khokan has also been caught red handed in a series of corruption allegations. Considering the above evidences, any one in the world can have serious doubt about the existence of rule of law in Bangladesh. I will not be surprise, if one day it is proved, the allegations brought against Khaleda Zia are politically charged. The way government is obstructing Khaleda's release on bail even by unduly influencing the lower courts would give a very negative signal to the international community. This claim gets strong substances as a High Court bench of justice Enayetur Rahim and justice Shahidul Karim made the observation on 06 June 2018 that magistrate proceeded with the matter in a wrong way.

Should such observations were made by the apex court in any decent and truly democratic nation, the magistrate concern should have been either demoted or even sacked. Because a person occupying the dignified seat of the court of law doesn't have any right of playing foul with such esteemed position. But unfortunately, in Bangladesh, not only the magistrate but even the members of the lower and higher courts are regularly performing as shameless clown of the ruling elites. This indeed is no good signal for any country.

Let us not forget, Khaleda Zia not only is a former Prime Minister, a leading politician but she also is a senior citizen of the country by exhibiting our 'stone aged' mentality by ignoring the health concern of this esteemed individual, we not only are proving ourselves as worst than beasts. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina must remember no government is the last government in the world. She should remember, Mahathir Mohammad sent Anwar Ibrahim in jail with false charges and even got him convicted in a kangaroo court with the wild aspiration of remaining in power indefinitely. But, the same Mahathir had not only virtually been kicked out of his party and had to apologise to an imprisoned Anwar Ibrahim - seek Anwar's political blessings and then only liberate Malaysia from the evil clutches of Najib Razak and his band of looters and culprits. In my previous articles, I have repeatedly said- being in jail doesn't mean end of the world. It was proved number of times. Nelson Mandela[branded as traitor and culprit by the South African government] walked out of the prison as an icon of democracy and liberation of people from the enslavement of corrupt regimes. Anwar Ibrahim has walked out of the prison proving the world, he is innocent! Rather those who sent him to prison [ both Mahathir and Najib] were political crooks. Who knows, if Khaleda Zia too walked out of the prison as a hero and sent her political rivals loaded in caravan of lorries to prison.

An imprison person deserves full right to all and any sorts of medical assistance and treatment. The post 11January 2007, military backed government didn't waste even a secant in ensuring total medical assistance and treatment both to Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia whenever it was required. They never played foul with this extreme important issue. But the way our so-called elected representatives are behaving with the imprison individual [ in case of medical assistance and treatment] are not only shameful to the highest order but it also is a clear violation of human rights - more precisely crime against humanity.

Politics should not be always directed towards vindictism.  We all know, during the campaign of the presidential election in the United States, hundreds and millions of Trump's supporters chanted - "lock her up". Meaning they wanted Donald Trump to sent Hillary Clinton into prison after his victory. Mr. Trump too repeatedly said- " We would lock her up". But after the election - as Trump's daughter Ivanka said- "President Donald Trump is completely a different person. His agenda is not sending his political rivals into prison". Instead he has been tirelessly and relentlessly trying to improve lives of the people of his country. He is trying to improve America's economy. He is trying to play important role in establishing global peace. In brief he is behaving like a real patriot and a true statesman. Wish Bangladeshi politicians would take any lesson from it.

America First policy and a turbulent global economy

M A Hossain

Even when Washington and Moscow were engaged into cold war, diplomatically, politically and militarily ; the global economy already were US dollar- based. Meaning, Lenin's ruble(Soviet currency) could never establish even the status of an internationally accepted currency. United Kingdom even though has a much older history of global dominance (as the British imperialists turned many of the countries in Asia, Africa and Europe as its colonies); Britain currency, bearing the portrait of the English monarchs had also been considered as a globally accepted and exchanged  second International currency. United States, a country discovered by Christopher Columbus, much later then the English dominance in the world, most definitely weren't considered as a rival - not to speak of a superpower either by the British or any of its fellow imperialists such as France etc in the Europe.
Let us not forget, in size, Soviet Union was the largest country in the world, spanning its territorial area from Europe to Asia. With such a huge area and plenty of natural and mineral resources, Soviet Union could not emerge as an economic superpower. As ruble were not accepted as an international currency, Moscow was continuing business, more precisely buying and selling goods from and to its friendly nations against barter - not cash.
The global acceptance of American dollar had keynote behind the United States emergence as the mightiest nation in the world. The control of global politics had long back gone into the absolute command of Washington. In today's world, any nation facing an economic sanction imposed by the United States finds it much harsher and tougher than a sanction imposed by the United Nations. Economic sanction imposed by any other individual nation, without a ditto from the United States actually becomes mere paper tiger. That is the reality - should anyone agree or not.
President Donald Trump has started imposing punitive taxes on products imported from China. Such measures may temporarily deprive the Americans from buying cheaper products and consumer items imported from China, but in long run, it will severely affect the Chinese economy. It is not unlikely that President Trump may look for alternative sources to supply cheaper goods to the American consumers, but the process may take some time. President Trump and his administration are fully aware of the fact as to how China has been gradually establishing political dominance in Australia, Canada and many of the African nations initially by exporting cheaper commodities and ultimately and gradually taking control of the politico-economic system in those nations. By selling cheaper commodities, Beijing already has established its economic dominance in most of the African nations. China has been extending all out support to those autocratic regimes in Africa and Asia for the sake of keeping the United States and the European Union away from infiltrating into Beijing's sole dominance. In Myanmar, for example, China is extending moral and even immoral support to the military - backed regime with the aspiration of keeping Myanmar under China's exclusive dominance.
Through the Maoist extremism, China has been consistently trying to establish its dominance in Nepal. Sri Lanka and the Maldives already are silently slipping onto Beijing's grip. Same thing may happen in the case of the Philippines, while countries like Cambodia and Vietnam already are within China's dominance. Only in the case of Bangladesh, China is yet to establish full dominance because of India's influence. Here again, one thing is common, which might have made Beijing greatly relieved. Both China and India are totally unwilling in allowing the United States in establishing any visible influence or dominance in Bangladesh. While for decades, China and Russia jointly had protected North Korea from any American dominance - in case of Bangladesh, the same method are jointly applied by the Sino-India nexus.
While it is most inevitable that Kim Jong Un and the socialist autocracy is about to fall in the North Korea- China and Russia, with the active collaboration of India may now put greater emphasis both on Bangladesh and Myanmar in avoiding another humiliating political defeat(as they already are going to witness in North Korea); and let Bangladesh and Myanmar slip into the grips of Washington's dominance.
American policymakers fully understand, unless they can minimizing Indian influence in Bangladesh, it won't be possible for Washington to establish dominance in this part of the world. With this understanding, the United States will apply multiple diplomatic tactics. The row between India and China over South China sea is just one issue. This will increase differences between India and China. The second issue would be the raise of radical Hindutva and repression on non-Hindus in India. There would be a sudden warmth in US-Pakistan relations, re-emergence of Khalistan movement and of course, 'eruption' of the sleeping volcanoes in the north-eastern part of India. president Donald Trump may also put pressure on Pakistan and India in letting the people of India and Pakistan occupied Kashmir hold the referendum of self- determination. Meaning, an independent Kashmir would emerge from the captivities of Pakistan and India. Catalan-type independence movements may also begin under American backing in Baluchistan, Tibet, Punjab, north-eastern States of India and even Poshchim Bangla(West Bengal). Bangladesh already has started spreading its Bengali nationalism in the West Bengal. The establishment of Bangladesh center in the Shantiniketan compound is just a beginning. Of course, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina does not have any anti-Indian agenda in her mind. But, as she has Stalinist like Hasanul Haq Inu and Rashed Khan Menon in her cabinet ; she also has some diehard pro-American(and of course anti Stalinist) within her inner circle. She even has few trusted and tested friends and allies of Pakistan (of course in disguise) right inside her house of policymakers.
Almost immediately after the Trump-Kim historic summit in Singapore, top policymakers in the Trump administration would most certainly turn their attention towards Bangladesh. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly has already been given a strong message of not sneaking his nose into Bangladesh affairs in ensuring a third consecutive term for Sheikh Hasina. America has left a clear message - this is not 2014. Those days of Barack Obama's timid and bankrupt diplomacy are gone. Bangladesh must hold a free, fair and participatory general election by December 2018. Washington is not ready or willing to see another 'Kim Jong Un' in Bangladesh. Narendra Modi has also been reminded of punitive economic measures like China, if he wants to play any 'foul' role of big brother in the region.
Modi most possibly got a clear message. He may not commit a political suicide by immorally supporting another fake election in Bangladesh. Moreover he knows, Indian voters may elect a secularist Rahul Gandhi as the next Prime Minister. Actually that's gonna happen!

Significance of Singapore meetings, summit and beyond!

M A Hossain

The much-awaited historic summit between the US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is still on the track. The July 12th summit would most definitely change the political landscape in the Korean Peninsula. It will establish American dominance in that part of the world, while would certainly minimize Sino-Russian influence to a great extent. Right from July 12th, the clock will start clicking towards the demise of decades-old authoritarian Kim dynasty in the North. Kim Jong Un's days will be numbered. In this particular case, neither China nor Russia could salvage the sinking 'boat' of the Stalinist regime in North Korea. Once again, after many years, President Trump has proved, America is the only and mightiest superpower in the world. Kim Jong Un is for sure, destined embracing the fate of Libya's executed leader Muammar Al Gaddafi. No one can save him. Neither China - nor Russia. He already has been left at the mercy of the United States.

Ever since assuming his office, President Donald Trump has been vigorously and effectively taking bold initiatives in freeing the world from autocratic rules. The only exception here is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. But, in my opinion, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman(MBS) has been taking series of initiatives in transforming a very conservative and corruption-plagued Saudi monarchism into a moderate one. He has been relentlessly working in sweeping-off social orthodoxy from the Saudi Arabia. It is anticipated, within next 2-3 years, Saudi societies will emerge as much liberal and modern than the United Arab Emirates. For this particular reason, and for an extra-offensive diplomacy towards Iran and a softer diplomatic approach towards Israel, MBS most possibly has become one of the top-most allies of the Trump administration. Being an important member of the Arab League, Saudi Arabia, for the first time has shifted its diplomatic policy towards the Palestinians. This has also made MBS a silent ally of the Jewish State.

Trump administrations economic diplomacy with China has also been extremely harsh and even punitive for Beijing. Although six of the seven member countries of the G-7 - especially France already has signalled of beginning an economic war with the United States, but in my own views, such threats won't actually work as the combined military strength of the European Union and even China and Russia  are much behind than that of the United States. Moreover, Brexit actually has turned the European Union into a teethless entity. They have lots of challenges - economic crisis, unemployment and even illegal migrant and refugee issues. For the European Union and or the six member nations of the G-7, it isn't the time of either beginning or winning any economic war with the United States.

America's massive influence has also been once again exhibited when ambassador Nikki Haley not only vetoed a resolution drafted by Qatar and moved in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in defence of the Palestinians; she also used terribly strong words against the nations supporting this resolution. Britain, along with few more nations had abstained from voting, while Russia, China and some other nations had voted in favor. Due to the veto of the United States, this resolution had also dried-up. This time again, ambassador Nikki Haley has clearly shown - America is the greatest and second to none. This very resolution has also proved - Russia, China, the European nations etc are just nothing in front of the tremendous power and influence of the United States. Two particular entities - Qatar and the United Nations may face consequence sooner or later for this resolution. There would be emergence of domestic political turbulence in Qatar and most possibly a change of the government. This time, Saudi Arabia will most definitely play vital role alongside the United States in giving a befitting lesson to the Qatari rulers. I won't be surprised, if an anti-monarchism revolution will begin in Qatar.

Ahead of Trump-Kim summit, the United States defense secretary James Mattis has been meeting some leaders in Singapore. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi too has met the US defense secretary seeking Washington's help in Indo-China conflict over the South China sea issue. Mr. James Mattis, has assured the help-seeker Indian Prime Minister the help of Washington in this regard. Through this meeting, Sino-India relations will get further bitter. Most importantly, by seeking help from the United States like an obedient help-seeker, Narendra Modi has clearly proved to the world- India is no factor at all and it does not deserve the minimal scope of proclaiming to be a global power. In front of the United States, India's so-called military strength or political intellect is actually similar to that of any struggling Asian nations. Through this meeting, Modi had to pledge his support towards America's demand of surrendering all sorts of verifiable nuclear weapons and installations by Kim Jong Un. It is not unlikely that India now may even abruptly shift its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

This actually is the beginning of a new era of America's sole supremacy on world affairs. Every nation must listen to what Washington desires.

Narendra Modi's latest exposure of being a mercy-seeker of the United States rings an alarming bell for the ruling party in Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina, who has been thinking, India can once again help her in remaining in power for the consecutive third term has virtually turned into a daydream. Actually it is United States, who can keep Sheikh Hasina in power. Not India. Not even China or Russia. Those days of a weaker America under the bankrupt rule of Barack Obama is a history now. President Donald Trump will not allow India or any other nation in playing any wrong game in keeping any government in power in South Asia through another fake election. This is the harsh reality. In my personal judgement, President Trump may even want to see Indian National Congress back to power. That means, a discreet connection between Washington and the Indian National Congress might have already been established. As Ivanka Trump is expected to become the first American female President in 2024, Washington may desire seeing a young Rahul Gandhi to be the next Indian Prime Minister. Political steering in India will actually go into the hands of young leaders like Rahul Gandhi. For Narendra Modi, most possibly, the coming months will be filled with series of political challenges and setbacks.

The Trump administration also may extend support towards the millions of Muslims in Assam, who are fearing to be expelled by the Modi government. In fact, the sleeping volcano of independence in the north-eastern part of India will re-emerge and start erupting soon. As I said, days of India's dadagiri(dominance or big brotherly attitude) in the region has already become lifeless.

Christopher Giddings, an influential member of the Republican Party, commenting on the forthcoming general election in Bangladesh said, "Members of the US Senate and Congress, irrespective of their political affiliations turn greatly dismayed when any government or nation insult any of the American constitutional institutions. Bangladesh has been showing total ignorance and had even shown the audacity of dishonoring the US House Resolution HR-64/2007 passed in defence of the freedom of expression. We are fully aware of the very wrong decision of the Bangladeshi authorities in blocking several websites of prominent newspapers. Such actions are similar to those of any isolated and authoritarian regime. We know, Obama administration could not play effective role in putting pressure on Bangladesh in showing respect to the aforesaid House Resolution. But, onwards, its not gonna happen again. Bangladeshi ruling party must hold a free, fair and participatory election. We are closely watching things in that country".

He added, "Democracy has to be restored in Bangladesh. Rule of law, human rights and rights to religion must be ensured. There should be an end to intimidation on the media".

A source in the Capitol Hill said, " We are aware of the facts about the ongoing drive of the Bangladesh government against narcotics. Through Dhaka's local press and the social media, we have taken note of the gruesome murder of Akramul Haque in Teknaf area in Bangladesh ; where two officers of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and Rapid Action Battalion(RAB) had taken active part. Why the government isn't yet taking any action against these perpetrators of heinous crime? That doesn't reflect Bangladesh's claim of the existence of rule of law".

He said, " Blocking the websites of any newspaper or news portal aren't smart job in this age of advanced technology. People always can use proxy gateways. By blocking The Daily Star, Bangladesh authorities had already proved, there are strong ingredients and substantial evidences on the crimes committed by the members of the law enforcing and security agencies. A content on the web gets spread and shared (even in PDF formation) within minutes. So, blocking it actually doesn't work".
